The Weekend

Last 2 days...gud one...this time...time spent on Internet was lowest in last 2-3 years. Watched TV shows...few gud one and few,,,don't ask me what were they....I am still trying to figure out.

Some gud food also was a highlight of the weekend.

Stressed?...Here is the solution

Researchers found that the supplement cut down the signs and symptoms of perceived stress and fatigue in healthy volunteers.

Marie-Anne Milesi from Seppic, France, worked with a team of researchers to evaluate its anti-stress effects in 70 volunteers.

"We wanted to test whether augmenting the body's ability to deal with oxidative species might help a person's ability to resist burnout," informs Milesi.

"The 35 people in our study who received capsules containing superoxide dismutase (melon derivative) showed improvement in several signs and symptoms of perceived stress and fatigue."

The researchers found a strong placebo effect in the volunteers who received inactive starch capsules, as can be expected when studying subjective feelings like stress.

However, the improvements seen in the supplement group were significantly greater, especially after 28 days, according to a release of BioMed Central.

"The placebo effect was only present during the first seven days of supplementation and not beyond," said Milesi.

"It will be interesting to confirm these effects and better understand the action of antioxidants on stress in further studies with a larger number of volunteers and a longer duration," she added.

These findings were published in BioMed Central's open access Nutrition Journal.

Sleep Well for a Sharp Memory

The first-of-its-kind study led by a cognitive neuroscientist at Michigan State University, appears in the September issue of the journal Learning & Memory.

Kimberly Fenn, principal investigator and MSU assistant professor of psychology, said: “It’s easy to muddle things in your mind.”

“This research suggests that after sleep you’re better able to tease apart the incorrect aspect of that memory,” the expert added. To reach the conclusion, Fenn and colleagues from the University of Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis studied the presence of false memory in groups of college students. While previous research has shown that sleep improves memory, this study is the first to address errors in memory, she said.

Study participants were exposed to lists of words and then, 12 hours later, exposed to individual words and asked to identify which words they had seen or heard in the earlier session. One group of students was trained in the morning (10 a.m.) and tested after the course of a normal sleepless day (10 p.m.), while another group was trained at night and tested 12 hours later in the morning, after at least six hours of sleep.

Three experiments were conducted, using different stimuli. In each, the students who had slept had fewer problems with false memory – choosing fewer incorrect words.

Tips to Sleep Well

Wear clothes that will ensure the right temperature for your body.

Routines are good. Try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Drinking coffee late in the night is a strict no. Avoid stimulants such as coffee, chocolate, soda or tea in the evenings. Reading in bed can be a problem. Read with a bright light on, if it helps you get sleep. Having a light snack before you hit the sack won’t keep you up, but a big meal will. Keep your workouts to much earlier in the day and not close to your sleeping time.

Don’t watch the clock. Anxiety is what wakes you in the middle of the night. Inadvertently, watching the clock can make you anxious.

Don’t get stressed out if you feel you aren’t getting enough sleep. It will just make matters worse.

Here, I start today

Its 12th September 2009 today. The time is 1:23pm IST.

I just thought...Let me start blogging. That is what the big shots are doing these days. Be it AB or King Khan from the B'wood or the President & PMs of large nations. Everyone is posting the happenings in their life on the blog sites.

When I started creating for my account on this Blog site, it did not ask me how big or small I am and my profile is in today's world. That gave me a comfort. OK...I can also do what big shots are doing.

So, here I am...and the journey starts NOW....
